Amazon.com Review A Japanese version of the mortar and pestle, this suribachi set from Helen's Asian Kitchen is ideally suited to grinding and crushing herbs, seeds, and spices for deliciously fresh food. Crafted from durable earthenware with a rich brown outer glaze, the suribachi bowl features an unglazed, ribbed interior. This design holds ingredients at a slope for efficient, visible grinding. The coordinating wooden pestle, or surikogi, works well with the ceramic materials, so that the ingredients, not the bowl, take the beating. Comfortable in the hand, the pestle is shaped to maximize the contours of the suribachi bowl for uniform and quick results. A bamboo brush also comes with the set for precision cleaning of the bowls' ribs. All pieces should be washed by hand to preserve their integrity. --Emily Bedard
Product Description A beautiful and essential kitchen tool for the preparation of many Asian dressings, sauces and pastes. Introduced from Southern China in the 11th century, the Japanese mortar (suribachi) and wooden pestle (surikogi) is an important tool in the Japanese kitchen. The literal translation of suribachi is grinding bowl. And that is what it does to perfection. The unglazed ridged interior facilitates grinding and prevents ingredients from slipping and sliding. The traditional wooden pestle is designed to prevent unnecessary wearing down of the ridges. This is a traditional Japanese mortar and wooden pestle with a bonus bamboo cleaning brush. To use: Simply place the suribachi over a damp towel or rubber mat on your work counter. Hold the pestle with one hand and rotate the pestle against the ridges. Use the specially designed bamboo brush to help dislodge ingredients.

Better than a mortar and pestle! May 9, 2010 Crystal Hogan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Love this Suribachi set! Much bigger than comparably priced mortar/pestle sets, beautiful design inside and out. The texture and ridges inside the bowl help to achieve a much finer grind of spices and herbs, and the bamboo brush gets all the bits out easily.
Product Excellent, Box damaged January 7, 2010 Key-Key Smith (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Helen's Asian Kitchen Ceramic set was delivered in a timely manner. All the pieces were there and the set was in great condition and was exactly like advertized.
The box looked like someone had opened it before, At any rate it was damaged and gave me a "scare" til I opened it. ( It was a Xmas present for a relative.)
Nice, beautiful, very useful! November 18, 2009 Therapist (California, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have a large and heavy granite mortar and pestle that I use for just about every spice, herb, chocolate nib, and even garlic. This smaller, lightweight, Ceramic Suribachi Set is perfect for when I don't want to lug my larger set over to the prep area. I find that I am grinding the smaller quantities of herbs more often using this set. Highly recommended -- especially if you already have the heavy duty granite mortar and pestle and want the flexibility for a gentler, lighter grind. The price makes this a value play for just about anyone looking for quality.
should have gotten something heavier November 17, 2009 Shamalbek (MO, USA) I like the suribachi, and it was inexpensive, but in retrospect I should have gotten a mortar and pestle from my local asian import store. Twice the price, but made of granite. It's a pain to crush spices in this thing. Crushing garlic, ginger and other herbs/veggies is a breeze, though.
Perfect!!! October 31, 2009 K. Hiramoto (Ohio) Exactly as discribed, small 5 & 1/2 inch! It is exactly like my grandmothers smaller bowl. This is so much nicer for grinding fresh and dry, I wouldn't trade it for the old type, ever. And yes it takes a little more time to clean, but for what it does, it isn't that much more work, I use a small button type vegetable brush with plastic bristles to clean mine, works so much faster then the bamboo brush.
(I hope you get in the larger 8 inch bowl for bigger jobs some time soon)
